Grading: There will be a graded lab report due after each week’s lab. Lab reports are due by 5pm, Thursday, the week of the lab. Labs turned in after 5pm Thursday but prior to 5pm the following Monday will receive a 20% per day late penalty. No points will be given for labs from the previous week submitted after 5pm Monday. Your average on all labs will count as 20% of the course grade for CSC 101. Lab grades will be posted on the campus BlackBoard server under the course name “Overview of Computer Science - Spring 2006”. You should periodically check your recorded scores for accuracy.
Lab Objectives: The purpose of the lab component of CSC 101 is to give you hands-on, practical, experience with the topics discussed in the text and in class. Most of all, the lab should be a positive learning experience. We encourage discussion and interaction with other students and lab instructors during lab. However, the lab report you submit each week MUST reflect your own work and understanding of the material.
pre-Lab: At least two days prior to each lab you will receive an e-mail with instructions as to how you should prepare for lab. If you don’t receive such an e-mail you can navigate to the URL listed above and find the instructions. For every lab you will need to print out a set of lab instructions to carry to lab. For some labs there will also be a mandatory pre-Lab activity or reading. If you don’t complete the pre-Lab you will not have as beneficial a lab experience and your lab will take longer to complete. If you don’t print the lab instructions and bring them with you then your lab will be very short and unfulfilling! For a few labs during the semester there will be a short quiz at the beginning of lab relating to the pre-Lab activities. Be sure to bring the lab instructions with you to your lab!
Completing Labs: Occasionally, you may not be able to finish your lab report in an hour. That is perfectly fine. Finish the lab report later and turn it in to Mrs. Johnson in West 233 by 5:00pm Thursday.
