What we'll do:

Three music and three computer science students are being recruited to work for eight weeks in the summer of 2008. These students will learn about digital sound for music, theatre, and movie production. If you are chosen for this summer learning opportunity, your responsibilities will be:

  • To learn how to record, edit, master, and distribute music and sound using digital sound production hardware and software;
  • To learn the science and mathematics underlying digital sound production tools;
  • To become aware of design, aesthetic, and commercial considerations in digital sound production;
  • To learn how to integrate your knowledge of science and technology with considerations of art, design, and practical use; and
  • To learn how to communicate and work with individuals with knowledge, skills, and aptitude different from but complementary to your own.

We, the researchers sponsoring this project, are interested in observing how students of science and music work together and learn from each other. Our ultimate purpose is to create curriculum material for computer science and digital sound design classes, bringing science and art together in ways that motivate and enlighten the student learning process.

Requirements for applicants:

  • Must be a student at a 4-year college or university;
  • Must have a current GPA of at least 2.5;
  • Must be either a computer science major or a student with background in music (can read music, can play a musical instrument, or is a music major) ; and
  • Must be available to work continuously on the Wake Forest campus, 40 hours per week, from June 2 until July 25, living in Winston-Salem.

What we'll provide:

  • A stipend of $400 per week for 8 weeks;
  • A supplement of $200 per week for 8 weeks to cover room and board
    (for those who don't live in Winston-Salem);
  • Access to housing on the Wake Forest campus if needed; and
  • Access to hardware and software for digital sound production in our Digital Media Lab.
